Its function is to server a partent item for menu tabs (menu tabs can be generated without a page, however, without this page simultaneously functioning as a „parent item“ to the page linked via the sub-menu, for administrators (so, at the back-end) every page would be listed alphabetically when you click on „All Pages“ – not thematically, like it is (almost) done now, when sub-pages are listed under parent-pages („almost“, because under the „parent item“ sub-item/pages are still listed alphabetically – but there is still a thematic structure, which helps).
